ＨＩＰ・ＨＯＰ誕生
　
　ＨＩＰＨＯＰは１９７０年代初頭にニューヨークのサウス・ブロンクス地区で生まれた。その地域には、貧困でドラッグにおぼれる人やストリート・ギャングが多い地区であり、古いぼろぼろの建物や火事で焼け残った建物が並ぶ町だ。
　当時、世間ではディスコが大ブームだった。だが、貧困なアフリカ系アメリカ人の若者達は、ディスコに遊びに行くお金がない。そこで彼らは公園に集まりパーティーをするようになる。家から運んできたターンテーブル（レコードプレーヤー）を外灯のコンセントに差込み、ＤＪがレコードを回すなかでダンサーが踊り、グラフティー・アーティストは建物や列車に絵を描き、ＭＣはラップを披露した。そんなパーティーはブロック・パーティーと呼ばれ、貧困な若者はお金がいらない公園で遊んだ。

世の中、人が集まるところには必ずリーダーやカリスマが存在するものだ。もちろん、これらのパーティーのなかでも、そういった３人のカリスマが存在した。若者達は、彼らが出現するブロック・パーティーに足を運ぶようになる。
　その３人とは、クール・ハーク、アフリカ・バンバータ、グランド・マスター・フラッシュの伝説のＤＪ達だ。この３人は、ＨＩＰ・ＨＯＰの歴史では元祖と称されている。
